Plastic Recycling News | Tomorrow Machine's Biodegradable Packaging

Whats on this page?

This week, we are thrilled to welcome Hanna Billqvist and Anna Glansén, AKA ‘Tomorrow Machine’

They are the Creative Designers behind one of the most innovative and forward thinking packaging projects in the world. I’ll let them explain though…
Hello Hanna & Anna, would you like to introduce yourselves? We are Hanna Billqvist and Anna Glansén and together we are the duo behind tomorrow Machine. We are both product designers specializing in packaging design. Hanna is based in Paris and Anna in Stockholm. We work together over Skype and travel between the two cities.

Can you tell us all about Tomorrow Machine?

We are both product designers specializing in packaging design. Hanna is based in Paris and Anna in Stockholm. We work together over Skype and travel between the two cities.
Our vision is to create better products and build a better world through research, new technologies & intelligent material.

Can you tell us about ‘This too shall pass?’

When we started this project we asked ourselves the question “Is it reasonable that it takes several years for a milk carton to decompose naturally, when the milk goes sour after a week?” This Too Shall Pass is a series of food packages were the packaging has the same short life span as the foods they contain. The package and its content are working in symbiosis. In this project, we asked ourselves how packaging can be made in a near future, with the technology that is available today. Our inspiration is fruit peel and how nature itself packages food.
Smoothie package Gel of the agar-agar seaweed and water are the only components used to make this package. To open it you pick the top. The package will wither at the same rate as it’s content. It is made for drinks that have a short life span and needs to be refrigerated, fresh juice, smoothies and cream for example. The packaging reacts to its environment, for example you could, just by looking at the package, see if it has been exposed to excessive heat during transport. Rice Package (see left) Package made of biodegradable beeswax.
To open it you peel it like a fruit. The package is designed to contain dry goods, for example, grains and rice.
Oil package A package made of caramelized sugar, coated with wax. To open it you crack it like an egg. When the material is cracked the wax do no longer protect the sugar and the package melts when it comes in contact with water. This package is made for oil-based food. None of the packages are available for commercial use at the moment, but two of them are in the very early stages of development for two brands. In the meantime we are working on multiple projects involving both packaging and product design, always with a focus on sustainability.

Have many businesses contacted you about using your innovations?

Yes, many food brands and producers have been interested in the packaging.

Where can we find them?

None of the packages from the series ‘This too shall pass’ are on the market yet.

Your designs would effectively cut out the need for plastic recycling, so could your packaging be made from recycled sources?

The packaging series “This Too Shall Pass is” is made from renewable sources, sugar, beeswax and agar-agar gel. We do not see that these packages can be made from recycled sources but we absolutely believe in recycled plastic as a great packaging material, we are currently working on a product made from recycled plastic.

How do you feel about the insane amount of packaging people consume?

It is obviously insane, but we do not believe in blaming the consumer. Manufacturers need to think in a different way, and offer consumers better and greener alternatives.

What are your thoughts about landfill use?

recycled plastic

We hope to see an increase in recycling (both from people and companies) and use of biodegradable materials in products and packaging, so that we can stop feeding the landfills.

What immediate suggestions would you make to packaging manufacturers to help them reduce end waste and increase recycling?

It is very difficult to say what an entire industry should be doing to solve a major problem and right now we see a lot of positive things regarding environmentally friendly solutions in the packaging industry. But if we should suggest one thing it is to think more creatively and outside the box when it comes to environmentally friendly packaging, and to take responsibility for the waste that is created by making the packaging easy to recycle.
