5. Derry, Northern Ireland – In fifth place, we have Derry, which is in Northern Ireland. This has a population of 150,497. In terms of plastic tonnes sent to recycling, they have sent 2,833 tonnes.
4. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales – Next, we have Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. While this part of the country may have only recycled 1,165 tonnes, it is significant when you consider the fact that the population is only 59,953. This makes it the fourth-best city in the United Kingdom for recycling.
3. Swansea, Wales – With a population of 245,480, Swansea does exceptionally well on the recycling front, recycling 4,982 tonnes of plastic.
2. Bridgend, Wales – There is a theme here, isn’t there? Wales is putting the rest of the United Kingdom to shame. In Bridgend, there is a population of 144,288, and they have sent 3,264 plastic tonnes to recycling.
1.Wigan, North West – Finally, a city that is doing well in England! Taking the top spot is Wigan, which is located in the North West of England. Wigan currently has a population of 324,650. Despite this, the area has managed to send 9,038 tonnes of plastic for recycling.
The information on the amount of plastic that has been recycled has been sourced through a survey that was carried out. This survey assessed the quantity of plastic that was sent for recycling from every city and town in the UK between 2017 and 2018. It was then cross-referenced with the population to create a plastic recycling index.
